The ego is far from a myth. Who you are, what you are, and why you do what you do is what it is. It cannot be stepped out of like some fancy dress persona. Ego is identity. Without it, what will you be?Then we start to see beyond the illusion of ego and glimpse the true nature of our mind.
Some people are strong willed and powerful, because they have a powerful ego. Calm and peaceful people are so because their calm ego makes them that way. There is no such thing as egotistical since the ego is active at all times. Without it you are nothing. No ego, then no name required either because such person has no place, no will, nothing.
'Mindfulness' is simply keeping reins on ones true character to try and be what one is not. It is one's ego that is being mindful, not some obscure idea of 'consciousness' being in charge. Consciousness is a result of the ego.
